20th of August

20th August, State Foundation Day of Hungary

It is one of the most spectacular holidays in Hungary. Actually, this is a huge celebration with a fascinating procession on the Kossuth square. Why is this day so special for Hungarians? It commemorates one of the most significant points of the Hungarian history when the Hungarian state was founded over a thousand years ago by the famous King Stephen I. The Catholic Church also calls him the first patron saint for turning Hungary into a legitimate Christian state after about a century of Paganism. Nobody works on this day, instead, thousands flock into the town or city centers to take part in elegant ceremonies, listen to speeches of politicians and marvel at the Fireworks Show at night spanning over the Danube.

Fireworks commence at about 9 p.m. and take roughly a half an hour. It is held on the Budapest Chain Bridge and in Gellért Hill in order to ensure the right sight for people living in different parts of the city. The modern scenery is backed by some classical songs, such as the famous Hungarian rock opera, Stephen, the King. The dominating colors of the show are red-white-green representing the Hungarian flag, and yellow-blue symbolizing the flag of the European Union. There are generally over 20,000 visual effects which make it a sheer unique pleasure and experience.

St Stephen’s day

Budapest dinner cruise

If you want to avoid the crowd but occupy an excellent place of sight for the fireworks, choose our Danube river dinner cruise. Our ship can be found by Dock 11 on Petőfi square; it departs at 6 p.m. and arrives at about 10:30 p.m. The route goes till the Margaret Bridge, then stays close to the Hungarian Parliament to ensure the best spot to adore the national firework. You can choose from a 4-course menu and an alcoholic or non-alcoholic welcome drink. The menu consists of four courses: a wide variety of appetizers, soups, main dishes and desserts which you can choose from. Of course, there are optional dishes for vegans, vegetarians or people with lactose or gluten intolerance. Just to give some examples: Spring salad, Goulash soup, Duck leg with potatoes and steamed red cabbage, Flan cake forest fruit ragout. Our talented chef guarantees the excellent quality of the dishes; moreover, a polite and friendly staff serves them onto your table during the whole Budapest dinner cruise.

Our bar on the exclusive catamaran contains quality drink you can pick from or you can choose our drink package (it contains a bunch of famous Hungarian wines, champagne, beer, soft and hot drinks) which means from the list below you can have unlimited consumption for the whole evening.

The evening program is the ultimate experience. There is a live folklore show with dance and music and with famous Hungarian operetta songs. You have probably heard that one of the most well-known parts of Hungarian traditions is folklore dance and folk costumes. How could it be better to celebrate the founding of the Hungarian State than a traditional folklore and operetta program with a Danube boat dinner? This program not only informs tourists coming to Hungary about traditional Hungarian customs but can also be part of one of the most important holidays of the year.

During the show, you can enjoy listening to Hungarian folk songs, such as “Csárdáskirálynő”, “Marica grófnő” or “Cigányszerelem” or learn the steps of typical Hungarian folk dances like The maiden’s round dance, Herdsman’s dances and Stick dance, Lad’s and Leaping Dances.

Regarding prices, you can find all information on our website. As you would expect, there are lower prices guaranteed for children between 5 and 15 years old. Tickets can be purchased at Dock 11 personally (near Elisabeth Bridge) or online where you can get extra discount and you will get the ticket in email. Booking is available for windows seats as well. If you have no reservation or purchased ticket, you can pick table from the leftovers upon arrival, so it is worth to arrive in time.

So do not hesitate much, book a table in advance to watch the spectacular fireworks from one of the best locations, also continue the night with amazing shows while consuming mouth-watering savories.

The New Bread is also celebrated on this day. In cities and in larger communities (even in Transylvania in Rumania) a loaf of bread is blessed and sliced by priests. The first blessing happened in 1092: this was the year when another saint-king, King Ladislaus I. declared it a sacred day. The craftsmen’s day also takes place on this day. There is a fierce competition among bakers who wins the award for the Year’s Cake of Hungary. Last year the winner war the delicious Komaromi Kislany Torte made from vanilla cream with walnut and pear pieces. After a Christian mass held in the St. Stephen’s Basilica the king’s mummified right hand is taken around the city as a procession from Szent István Square. Some state awards are handed over on this day, such as the Order of Saint Stephen of Hungary. In the evening the beautiful fireworks close the whole series of events.
